Jacobson plans to announce in May

Matt Jacobson, a Republican who formed an exploratory committee in February to consider a run for governor in 2010, said today he plans to make an announcement about his candidacy in early May.

Things are going well, he said.

"We've gotten a really good reception," he said. "I think we're going to do it." Jacobson, president of Maine & Company, talked about the business climate Thursday in a noontime presentation to the Maine Press Association. He didn't talk about politics, but said the state lacks leadership and focus in the areas of economic development.

There will be more about his speech in Friday's Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel.

But back to the political stuff.

"I think people are looking for a change," he said after the speech. "Somebody who's created jobs in Maine? People are interested in listening."

Jacobson, 48, is one of six people who have registered with the state ethics commission to run for governor. Here's the list so far:

•Alex Hammer, Bangor, unenrolled •Matt Jacobson, Portland, Republican •Bruce Poliquin, Georgetown, Republican •Patrick Quinlan, Gorham, Green Independent •Peter Truman, Old Orchard Beach, Democrat •Lynne Williams, Bar Harbor, Green Independent
